Chef Software, Inc. is an American corporation headquartered in Seattle, Washington, which produces software allowing information technology departments to automate the process of configuring, deploying and scaling servers and applications.

About the Project: After the new visual style was well received, we moved forward with redesigning our web presence using the new visual language. We started by creating an online hub of educational content for our community.

Challenge: Chef provides a variety of educational materials to customers to help them understand the product and maximize its effectiveness in their organization. Historically, all of the materials created for this purpose were one-off projects that were inconsistent, scattered around various websites, and not curated after release. It was difficult for customers to navigate these pages to learn how to use the product. Our challenge was to revamp this experience and make it simple and delightful for our customers.

Solution: We designed and implemented a centralized community hub, which included links to all of our educational materials, discussion boards, webinars, and social media outlets. This hub provided a guided path through our tutorials and learning series to help customers stay on track with what was essential to know about Chef’s products, as well as additional references for less common use cases. This hub is continuously curated by the marketing team, to ensure that information is relevant and up to date. I worked closely with the project owner on the UX design process and led the design of the UIs for all of these experiences.  All of this new content was created using the new Chef visual language.

Impact: Chef’s community has a home where they can find consistently updated information about the products, solution deep-dives, and each other. This hub received significant positive feedback from the community members, which was reflected in a significant raise in interaction; webinar attendance increased by 35%, educational document downloads from the site increased by 20%, and forum interactions increased by 15%.  We also received positive anecdotal feedback from important community members on the improvements to learning about the product via Chef’s developer advocates.
